Baby 2: Eight Months Old

Smiley boy!

I almost forgot to do this update! Max has been eight months old since Sunday. Just look at his smiley face!

Movement: Still commando crawling and rolling around everywhere.

Sitting: Making good progress here and he’s sometimes now able to sit unaided for a couple of seconds.

Teeth: None but potentially some signs that he’s starting to teethe.

Brain: His MRI results came back and they’re confident it’s just a blood vessel anomaly and absolutely nothing to worry about which is reassuring.

Cough: Max is just getting over a bout of bronchiolitis which has been tough for him – lots of coughing, disturbed sleep, coughing so hard he’s sick, he’s been off his food, just not a good week at all.

Bottles: He’s only really having three now and it’s been a real struggle to get any milk into him, that may be the illness so I haven’t cut down expressing yet just in case he goes back up to four once he’s fully better.

Food: Potentially there was a reaction to lamb or turnip so we took both of those out of his diet and were due to re-try lamb on the dietician’s advice, but then he got ill so we haven’t added anything as it’d be difficult to tell if he was reacting or just poorly. He’s now having Neocate Spoon supplements to add some more calories into his diet. We’ve really struggled getting much food into him recently but hopefully his appetite will come back. We’re now down to: cauliflower, broccoli, parsnip, avocado, blueberries, strawberries, peach, plum, Nutribrex cereal and coconut milk/yoghurt.

Toys: He absolutely loves some pom poms Alex won in a game of Halloween pass the parcel. Also liking his Nuby teething toy that goes in the fridge, his inflatable ring he can sit in (kindly donated by his cousin), jumparoo and anything that Alex plays with too, so he spends a lot of time ‘helping’ her build towers with her Lego!

Weight: He weighs 16lb 12 which puts him just above the 9th centile which is great news! We go back to his consultant in January who will be thrilled if he’s still following the same curve. Max is wearing mostly 6-9m clothes now and although most of his tops and t-shirts are fairly roomy, I think he’ll move up to the next size trousers roughly when he turns nine months if he carries on growing at the same rate.

Naps: Normally, Max has a nap in the morning from around 9.30am (slightly later sometimes) til approx. 11am. Then in the afternoon he’s most happy if we can get him to sleep from about 1.30pm to 3pm. This all varies of course depending on what we’re doing that day.

Babbling: He’s much more talkative than I remember his sister being at this age. He babbles constantly and it sounds like he says ‘okay’, ‘yeah’ and ‘hiya’ quite a lot although clearly he has absolutely no idea he’s doing it. He’s very expressive and one of those babies who ends up making friends in the queue at the supermarket as he’s normally very smiley.

13 Months Old

At a tiny pal's birthday party.

At a tiny pal’s birthday party.

Deary me, it’s time for another monthly update already. Alexandra is 13 months old today – where did that month since her birthday go? This month Alex:

  • Has perfected her climbing skills. She can now climb off the sofa and the bed, climb on to the sofa and the windowsill, and likes to climb on to tables whenever she gets half a chance. Basically if you take your eyes off her for half a millisecond she’ll find somewhere to shimmy up.
  • Still hasn’t got any more teeth. Although there are signs one of the top two is coming through. Update: I wrote this on Tuesday then the day after the corner of the top one popped through!
  • Has been busy growing her hair. It’s really lovely and thick now. Every few weeks we decide on a different celebrity she looks like: for a while it was old-school Justin Bieber with the flicky fringe, then it grew into a Gallagher brothers barnet and now it’s most definitely the same hairstyle as Pauline Quirke. We’ve been calling her Pauline for the last couple of weeks which must be fairly confusing for the poor child!
  • Possibly has worms. She wants to eat non-stop. We took her out to a buffet place for lunch on Monday as Dylan was off and I swear she ate more than the two of us combined!
  • Is even cheekier than before. She knows if she’s doing something wrong and keeps glancing back and grinning, wondering if you’ll catch her. I’ve spent the entire month picking up things she’s thrown/broken/moved out of their correct place/hidden.
  • Has become much better at walking. She now hardly crawls anywhere and spends about 70 per cent of the time walking holding on to something or someone and the other 30 walking unaided.

She’s got such a little funny personality now and although it’s hard work keeping up with her as she wants to mess with EVERYTHING all the time, she’s really good most the time and an enjoyable little person to spend time with!

Eight Months Old

Apologies this post is a few hours late. I’ve been busy trying to tackle my to do list, which I might talk about in a future blog. I might not though. The suspense!

It's true what they say about kids and boxes.

It’s true what they say about kids and boxes.

Tomorrow, Alexandra turns eight months old. A whole two thirds of a year. Only four months away from her first birthday. This fact scares me. I want to pause time and keep her how she is now for so much longer!

So, what did month seven have in store for our intrepid little explorer? Well, Alex has taken her A-Levels, got a mortgage and next week she’s starting her new job. Maybe not, but it does feel like she’s really grown up all of a sudden.

Moving:

She doesn’t want to spend much time lying down at all and so we’re doing a LOT of sitting down – she’s very good at it now and only occasionally over-balances and topples over. She’s rolling from back to front to back with ease and can get pretty much anywhere by rolling. No crawling yet but definite efforts too and with just a little more strength in her arms I can see her pushing herself up into the proper crawling position fairly soon.

Eating:

Alex loves her food and so far we haven’t found anything she won’t eat. She has three meals every day and we’re now introducing snacks too to try and reduce how many bottles she has (currently four a day). She’s regularly eating what we eat (but blended into lumps) for dinner and is getting much better with finger food. Before she’d just gum it and nothing much would happen but she’s now learning how to eat stuff properly.

Noises:

Alexandra has definitely developed her range of noises. She says ‘dada’ a lot – but I don’t think she’s associated the word with Dylan yet so I’m still saying it’s babbling rather than her first words. We also get sounds like ‘yeah’ and ‘nana’. Oh and so many squeals of excitement! We find she talks more when it’s quiet or she’s in the house, whereas if we’re out and it’s noisy she talks much less.

Others:

No teeth yet, still a little gummy bear.
18lb 11.5oz at her last weigh-in last week.
Still wearing 6-9m clothes but I’m not sure she’ll last all month in them!
Favourite toy: Lamby (predictably, he’s a lamb).
Swimming beautifully (she really knows what she’s doing with her arms and legs, once she can float by herself she’ll be off!) and even diving in off the side (with a little assistance)!

All in all, I think we’ll keep her for another month.
